I suppose if I hadn't said "Katherine Mansfield" already I would say it now. But that probably means there's no longer any need.

At this length we are almost certainly, as readers, too far out of the loop to be sure we know what's really going on. Your characters are alive in your head, and what is happening on the page is part of a larger canvas we can't see. Maybe we register that The Magic Mountain is not the shape of book that will fit easily under the pillow, or maybe we don't. Is Beth like Chekhov's gun, destined to go off in the second act? But despite the moments that might veer into self-parody, we are still wondering....
