After learning about massive impediments to reform in India while doing research on ethnic violence, I decided to study law rather than political science because I wanted to be able, not just to influence academics with my ideas, but to understand how to use those ideas and words to actually bring about the changes I envision. Relative to many other countries, I think ours grants a lot of power to those who have a command over the legal system. I think an understanding of that system might go a long way towards an understanding of how to implement one's ideas.
