I think this draft would have better served as a rhetorical flowerbed for the revision of the first essay, so as to allow you a second topic in the course.
Standing on its own, it makes little sense to me. "Open source"
software is not the preserve of an intransigent minority, or any
minority. It is now the dominant mode of developing and licensing
software in the world. Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the other
platforms cannot exist without it. "The cloud" is made of it. The
tools of FOSS development, such as git, have become the primary
machine tools of software making. Android, which is a mostly-FOSS
operating environment, is the axiom of mobile coimputing. The
premise of the essay doesn't seem to me to accord with reality.
The use of copyleft licensing to protect users' rights in their own devices, on the other hand—which was the subject I thought you should have considered in the revision of the first essay—is another matter. Software doesn't really exist for most users anymore: it is embedded in devices that they use as appliances and is only visible to their awareness in tangible form. Your analysis both embodies that fact and is trying to rise above it, but has no more than political rhetoric available as a tool for doing so.
