Law in Contemporary Society
Hello wiki!

I wanted to let all interested know that my friend Yin Huang has kindly offered to teach people how email encryption works and how to set it up, since this is something we have previously discussed on the wiki.

People will be meeting at the security desk (appropriately enough) in JG Lobby at 3pm on Friday October 15th. We will then proceed to a room that's available and big enough for however many people show up. Yin and I will be putting up fliers but if you would like to do so as well, the pdf is attached to this page.

I think this would also be a great opportunity for those gathered to discuss future meetups to talk about law school and the legal profession. If you want to know more, or are interested in any of these things but can't make it, please feel free to email me (you can find my email in the LawNet directory).

Here are some topics that Yin has proposed to discuss. Feel free to post suggestions.

  • How encryption is fundamentally different from a login password
  • A short analogy relating e-mail to the postal service
  • The Caesar cipher as a simple example of a symmetrical encryption algorithm
  • The fundamental problem of key distribution in symmetrical encryption algorithm
  • How asymmetric encryption algorithms solve the key-distribution problem
  • PGP as the particular algorithm we'll be using
  • Installation of Thunderbird, GnuPG, and Enigmail
